5 DISASTER MOVIE SCENERIOS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED

Have you ever seen a movie where you feel like screaming at the characters for being such idiots? If they had only… they should have… if they had been a little more prepared… if they had only thought of… There are literally thousands of movies that this applies to. Most of the horrible situations characters in disaster movies find themselves in could have been prevented with a little preparedness and planning. Here are our five preventable disaster favorites.
Movie #1: CONTAGION
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: An infectious disease starts killing off the world’s population. People die while they seek a cure.

Okay, so the outbreak obviously couldn’t have been prevented. However, I would prefer not to be among the dead. Casualties could have been greatly minimized if people could have simply stayed in their homes, fortifying, for at least a few weeks. Those who are not prepared would have had to leave their homes to get food and water. In cases of mass disease, like the Black Plague of old, or even the most recent Ebola outbreak, the best defense is preparation.

Movie #2: HOURS
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Hurricane Katrina is coming and Paul has a newborn infant in the ICU. Paul has to take care of his newborn with very limited resources in an evacuated hospital until help can arrive.

Honestly, there are a lot of things that Paul could have done differently in order to keep himself safe including recognizing the pending emergency sooner. Be aware of what could happen. Paul was basically stranded with his baby without food, water, or electricity. He was also vulnerable to looters as he made himself vulnerable while scavenging for food, help, and answers. If he would have been prepared, he could have barricaded himself in the hospital room with his daughter until help arrived. It only takes two or three days of going without necessities before the chaos begins. Those who are unprepared will go to great lengths to get things like food and water. This film does a great job at illustrating the hysteria that natural disaster can cause. If he had an emergency essentials grab bag in his car, he would have had a much more pleasant time. Additionally having a way to protect himself and his new daughter would have gone a long way. Many people have chosen to include a gun with their bug-out supplies.

Movie #3: JURASSIC PARK
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Dinosaurs are created by mad geniuses. Things go bad. Dinosaurs eat people. They try to escape.

I hate it when this happens. Just the other day I had to bandage my coworker up after a raptor attacked him. Honestly, if this actually happened, there is no magic emergency supply or scenario that would have saved them. Eventually they had to get to safety, because waiting this one out was simply not possible. Truthfully, you can’t always stop a bad situation from getting worse, no matter what you have, but you can survive. A few helpful tools that they used were walkie-talkies to keep in contact when separated, and a first aid kit to stop the bleeding in case of an impending attack. These are a few more tools to add to your grab bag.
Best Remedy: RUN!
Movie #4: TWISTER
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: A bunch of crazy scientists like to chase tornadoes in order to study them. Things go bad… obviously.

First of all, if they hadn’t gone chasing wild weather anomalies, this whole movie wouldn’t have happened; so problem solved. Don’t be stupid. If you are going to be stupid and purposely place yourself in extremely dangerous situations, then at least a little foresight into the emergencies you might face, and the tools you might need would be helpful. Among the many other things that have been mentioned above, a duel purpose flashlight radio would be helpful. If the power is out, you will at least have something to see with, and if you want information on when to duck and cover, the radio weather channel would also assist with that. Also, a few waterproof matches might assist as you may need to start a fire at some point to keep warm or cook some food, and everything is likely to be very very wet.

Movie #5: WORLD WAR Z
MOVIE SYNOPSIS: A virus begins to turn people into man-eating zombies. The good guys fight to survive while attempting to find a cure.

The thing about zombie movies is that there are some strange similarities between zombies and desperate people. So even if there is no exact impending zombie attack, it is always best to be prepared with all of the items above and more, in case your neighbor becomes a desperate zombie for one reason or another. The problem with preparation is many people are living month-to-month, with little extra money to spare for food insurance in cases of emergencies like these. However there is a solution with our pay-as-you go monthly program. Just like regular insurance, you pay a little each month. But unlike regular insurance, you will actually receive physical product each month, rather than some nebulous financial protection plan. That way, instead of running around like a chicken with your head cut off, raiding grocery stores and pillaging the city seeking supplies with everyone else, you will have more time to prepare, fortify and get to safety.
