Community Emergency Preparedness
The more people who are prepared when a disaster strikes, the better off everyone will be. Imagine living in a place where every single person had a well-stocked food storage supply, and enough survival gear to live comfortably for several months. If everyone was prepared during an emergency, grocery stores wouldn’t be bombarded, people wouldn’t be inclined to attack others, and the community would be able to pick itself back up quickly and efficiently. Spring is here, and with it comes delicious strawberries! Here is some interesting information about how long strawberries last.
Food Storage Tips for Beginners
In light of recent events, may people have felt the subtle urge to start preparing for the possibility of something affecting their food supply. Each individual has his or her own reason for preparing. It could be the threat of global warming, the possibility of a major economic downturn, a job loss, or a natural disaster. Whatever the concern may be, it never hurts to start preparing.
Food Storage Origins
Sometimes taking a look at the past will help to guide us for the future. Civilizations have been gathering food to store since the beginning of time. Thousands of years ago, if you didn’t hunt and find food, you didn’t survive. Indigenous people foraged for food and were able to use what they had to preserve the food for as long as they could, so that they would always have something to eat. They couldn’t simply build a food storage the way that we can today. Because they were required to live off the land, they did what they could to store food for long periods of time. Long-Term Water Storage
Food storage is a huge part of being prepared for an emergency, but a major component of food storage is also having an adequate water supply. While most emergency kits are equipped with a water filter that can be used if water needs to be collected from an unclean source, it is a really good idea to also store water. If a major catastrophe happens in your area, water may become a scarce commodity. Water could also be contaminated to the point that you can’t completely filter it.

Food Insurance and The Special Operation Warrior Foundation
On September 1, 2011 Food Insurance™ announced that it was going to use its Facebook page to host a fund raising event for The Special Operation Warrior Foundation (SWOF). For each new “like” that the Food Insurance™ page received from September 1st to September 12th we decided to donate $1 to SWOF.
We chose The Special Operation Warrior Foundation for many reasons. They do a great work in assisting the families of wounded and fallen soldiers. We felt this was a particularly great cause because they take care of the families of those brave men and women that have given all to take care of all of us. This amazing foundation provides scholarships to the children of fallen soldiers and then follows up with the students throughout the time they are in school.
We did a little more checking and The Special Operations Warrior Foundation is a four star rated charity. This is the highest rating possible for a charity. This was very important to us as we wanted to get the most out of the money we donated and we knew that this was going to be the case with SWOF.
Once we announced the fund raising event on the Food Insurance™ Facebook page the response was tremendous. New “likes” started pouring in. One of the best parts was the feedback we got on our Facebook page. People shared with us their concern for the current active duty military and their admiration for our efforts in bringing awareness to such a great cause.
By the time the fund raiser was over we had raised over $2,000.00 for The Special Operation Warrior Foundation and hopefully created a greater awareness for such a worthy organization. We’d like to thank all those who participated in the fund raiser.
