The Importance of a Reliable Heat Source
A reliable heat source will be invaluable during a crisis. Heat is crucial to human survival. Being unprepared during an extend power outage can quickly become a serious situation.
Every family should have at least one heat source that does not require electricity. Fires are an obvious source of heat; but keep in mind fires need fuel to survive. If you simply store a package of matches, you may find yourself burning some of your valuables or furniture in order to keep your fire alive. If you already have a wood-burning fireplace or stove in your home, it is a great idea to keep enough firewood to sustain it for an extended period of time. Fireplaces can provide both heat and a source for cooking.
A good option for those who do not have a wood-burning fireplace or stove is to purchase a small electricity-free stove. Many small stoves can be powered by fuel pellets that burn for several hours after being lit. If you choose to buy a small stove for your family, make sure that you also have enough pellets to keep it lit for an extended period of time. This is especially in locations that become cold in the winter. You will also need to keep matches on hand to light the fuel pellets. Food Insurance offers several stoves that are ideal for cooking and keeping warm in an emergency.
Even if you do not need a source of warmth, your heat source can be used for other purposes. Many food storage items require cooking, and the ones that don’t still generally taste better warm. Never underestimate the power of a warm meal during a time of need. Heat sources can also be used to boil water in order to purify it for drinking.
Please remember to be responsible and never put your family at risk when using any type of burning stove. Make sure you are aware of how hot your stove will get, how much clear space it needs around it when lit, an whether it is safe to use indoors or not. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a real concern whenever a fire is present in an enclosed area.
The simplest way to keep warm is by keeping extra clothing and blankets available if you lose power. By bundling up, you can preserve some of the heat escaping from your body. Each family member should have a reflective thermal blanket. These are cheap and lightweight, but will reflect your body heat back when you are wrapped in them.
When you are preparing your family for an emergency, never overlook the importance of having a reliable heat source.
Your blog has grow to be component of my everyday routine, i am thrilled when i find a new post of yours on my rss reader, just thought i would let you know. thanks
Interesting… I used to think that storing up emergency food was only for tinfoil hat wearing lunatics, but these days it looks like the only sensible thing to do! The government should work to constantly improve emergency food programs, but American citizens should take it upon themselves to store food and water for their families during an emergency. There’s a good article about how to start your own food storage program very easily here.
Definitely something to take a look at if you are worried about a natural disaster or social upheaval interrupting the food supply.
I would like more information on the emergency stoves discussed on your website.
